The retina is the thin, delicate tissue lining the inside back of the eye. It acts like the film in a camera, capturing light rays and translating them into neural signals that the brain recognizes as vision. The vitreous is the clear gel filling the space between the lens and retina.

High blood sugar damages the microvasculature of the retina, leading to swelling (macular edema) or abnormal blood vessel growth (neovascularization) that can bleed into the vitreous. Frequent diabetic screenings are essential.

Urgently Halting Vision Loss

A retinal tear occurs when the vitreous gel pulls away and tears the retina, which can lead to a full retinal detachment (a shadow or curtain over vision). This is a medical emergency requiring rapid intervention.

Retinal Treatments

Retina care relies heavily on high-resolution imaging and targeted therapies. Depending on your diagnosis, Dr. Adeel may perform:

  • Intravitreal Injections (Anti-VEGF): Labeled as a miracle therapy for Wet AMD, diabetic macular edema, and retinal vein occlusions. These microscopic injections halt abnormal vessel growth and dry up retinal swelling. The procedure is performed under deep local anesthesia and is completely painless.
  • Retinal Laser Photocoagulation: Thermal laser energy is used to seal leaking blood vessels or "weld" retinal tears to the back of the eye, preventing progression to detachment.
  • Vitrectomy Surgery: An advanced micro-surgical procedure where the vitreous gel is removed from the eye to repair retinal detachments, clear massive vitreous hemorrhages (blood), or peel macular membranes.

What to Expect During a Retinal Exam

Step 1 — Deep Dilation

Pupil Enlargement

We administer dilating eye drops. It takes 20-30 minutes for your pupils to open fully, allowing Dr. Adeel to clearly inspect the entire periphery of your retina.

Step 2 — High-Res Imaging

OCT & Fundus Photography

We take ultra-detailed scans of your macula and optic nerve. These scans measure retinal layer thicknesses at a micron scale, documenting any trace of fluid or swelling.

Step 3 — Indirect Ophthalmoscopy

Clinical Evaluation

Dr. Adeel uses a specialized head-mounted light source and a handheld lens to manually examine the retina, looking for early vascular changes, tears, or thinning.

Step 4 — Dilation Recovery

Following Your Exam

Dilating drops blur your reading vision and make you light-sensitive for 3 to 4 hours. You must bring sunglasses and have someone drive you home after your exam.

It is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels of the retina. Chronically elevated blood sugar causes these tiny vessels to leak fluid, swell, or bleed, eventually forming scar tissue that can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated.
No. Although the idea of an injection into the eye sounds frightening, we use powerful anesthetic drops to completely numb the eye. Most patients report feeling only a brief, mild pressure sensation rather than sharp pain, and the actual injection takes less than two seconds.
Floaters are tiny specks or threads drifting across your field of vision, caused by shadows cast by clumps in the vitreous gel. Flashes are arcs of light that look like lightning, caused by the gel pulling on the retina. A sudden increase in floaters or new flashes requires an immediate dilated retinal exam to rule out a tear.
All patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes should undergo a comprehensive, dilated retinal examination at least once a year. If diabetic retinopathy is detected, Dr. Adeel will recommend more frequent follow-ups (every 3 to 6 months) depending on severity.
