What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the vital cable carrying visual signals from the retina to the brain. This damage is most commonly associated with elevated pressure within the eye (intraocular pressure, or IOP).

Because glaucoma damages peripheral vision first, most patients do not notice any changes until advanced vision loss has occurred. This has earned it the title "the silent thief of sight." While vision lost to glaucoma cannot be recovered, early detection and consistent management can successfully preserve your remaining sight.

How We Detect Glaucoma

A simple puff of air is not enough. We perform comprehensive, multi-step screenings to identify early signs before vision is affected.

Applanation Tonometry

Gold Standard Pressure Check

We measure intraocular pressure using the highly precise Goldmann Applanation Tonometer rather than relying only on non-contact puff tests. Keeping IOP in check is key to halting glaucoma progression.

Visual Field Analysis

Perimetry Testing

We map your peripheral vision using computerized visual field analyzers to locate any blind spots or areas of diminished sensitivity that indicate early optic nerve fiber compromise.

Treatment Modalities

Glaucoma treatment focuses exclusively on lowering intraocular pressure to a "target level" where further optic nerve damage is prevented. Depending on the type and severity of your condition, Dr. Adeel may recommend:

  • Prescription Eye Drops: The most common initial treatment. These drops work by either reducing the fluid production inside the eye or increasing its outflow drainage.
  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT): A quick, painless in-office laser procedure that stimulates the eye's natural drainage tissue, lowering pressure without the side effects of daily drops.
  • Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI): Performed for narrow-angle or angle-closure glaucoma. The laser creates a tiny opening in the iris to restore normal fluid pathways.
  • Surgical Trabeculectomy: For advanced cases where drops or lasers fail. A new, microscopic drainage pathway is surgically created to allow fluid to bypass natural channels.

Ongoing Care & Monitoring

Step 1 — Baseline Testing

Establishing Target IOP

We perform full pressure checks, OCT nerve scans, corneal thickness measurements, and visual fields to set your unique baseline and target intraocular pressure.

Step 2 — Drop Therapy

Initiating Treatment

We prescribe eye drops or schedule a laser SLT. You are instructed on proper drop instillation techniques to maximize efficacy and minimize systemic absorption.

Step 3 — 4-Week Checkup

Evaluating Efficacy

We check your IOP after 4 weeks of therapy. If pressure is at target and there are no side effects, we establish a routine monitoring schedule.

Step 4 — Lifetime Care

Routine Follow-ups

Glaucoma requires lifetime vigilance. We see stable patients every 3 to 6 months to check pressure and repeat nerve scans/visual fields annually to ensure no progression.

Glaucoma is primarily caused by a mismatch between fluid production and drainage inside the eye, leading to increased intraocular pressure. Over time, this pressure pinches and damages the delicate nerve fibers of the optic nerve.
No. The nerve fibers that make up the optic nerve cannot regenerate once they are damaged. This is why early detection is critical — treatment can only preserve the vision you currently have, not restore what has already been lost.
High-risk factors include being over age 40, having a family history of glaucoma, having high intraocular pressure, being nearsighted (myopic) or farsighted (hyperopic), having diabetes, or having used steroid medications for long periods.
Not necessarily. Some people have high eye pressure without developing nerve damage (ocular hypertension). Conversely, others develop glaucoma with normal eye pressure (normal-tension glaucoma). A comprehensive optic nerve scan is needed for diagnosis.
